Airbnb Better Maps
Last updated: September 28, 2026
Overview
Airbnb Better Maps adds transit lines and neighborhood overlays to Airbnb search-result maps. It is developed by Hugo Biais. The extension has no user account, analytics or tracking SDK, advertising system, or developer-operated backend.
Local storage
The extension uses Chrome’s local extension storage (chrome.storage.local) to remember layer preferences and cache public map data. This storage is on your device and is not synchronized by the extension. Cache entries may be refreshed or removed as the extension runs. You can clear cached data through the extension controls. Uninstalling removes its local extension storage.
Requests to map and font providers
To display overlays, the extension requests public transit data from OpenStreetMap’s Overpass API at overpass-api.de and neighborhood data from hoodmaps.com. These requests include the visible map’s geographic bounding box or the relevant city or dataset identifier. This describes the area you are viewing, not a device geolocation reading. Label fonts are loaded from Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com).
What these providers receive
As with ordinary web requests, third-party services can receive your IP address and normal connection or request metadata, as well as the requested map area or resource. Their processing and retention are governed by their respective privacy policies. The extension does not send them your Airbnb account details, payment information, or saved listings, and does not send extension data to a server operated by the developer.
Permissions
Storage saves preferences and caches map data. Scripting lets the toolbar popup check whether the active Airbnb page contains a map. Access to supported Airbnb domains allows the extension to add its map overlays on search-result pages. Access to map-data providers allows it to retrieve the public data used for these overlays.
Your choices
You can disable individual map layers or the extension, clear cached data using the extension controls, or uninstall it. The developer does not sell extension data or use it for advertising, profiling, or credit decisions.
