Better Socials

Overview

Better Socials adds outlier badges, download buttons and a CSV export to Instagram (instagram.com) and TikTok (tiktok.com) in Chrome. It is developed by Hugo Biais. No account is required, and the extension contains no advertising, analytics, tracking SDKs, or developer-operated backend. It is not affiliated with Instagram, Meta, TikTok or ByteDance.

Data the extension reads

On instagram.com and tiktok.com, the extension reads the post data those sites already load for the page you are viewing: post identifiers; view, like, comment, share and save counts; post dates; creators’ usernames and follower counts; captions; and links to the posts’ media files. It uses this data in your browser to calculate badges, name downloaded files and build CSV exports. It does not read your messages, account settings or passwords, and it does not send any of this data to the developer or to anyone else.

Network requests

The extension does not call Instagram’s or TikTok’s APIs itself. When you choose to download a post, it fetches that post’s media files from Instagram’s or TikTok’s content servers—the same files the site plays—using your browser session where TikTok requires it. It makes no other network requests: no analytics, no remote code, and no requests to servers operated by the developer.

Files you save

Downloads and CSV exports are saved to your Downloads folder through Chrome’s downloads feature. CSV exports contain the post data listed above for the posts loaded on the page. These files stay on your device.

Local storage

The extension uses Chrome’s local extension storage (chrome.storage.local) to remember your panel settings, your Date posted filter choice and the identifiers of posts you have already downloaded, so “Download all” can skip them. This storage stays on your device, is not synchronized by the extension, and is removed when you uninstall it.

Permissions

Downloads saves the files you choose. Storage remembers the settings and downloaded-post list described above. Scripting loads the extension’s bundled media library into the page only when an HD download needs its picture and sound merged. Access to instagram.com and tiktok.com lets the extension show badges and download buttons on those sites and fetch the media you choose to save.

Sharing and sale

The developer does not receive, sell, or share user data and does not use it for advertising, profiling, or credit decisions.

Your choices

You can collapse the panel, turn off HD in “Download all”, disable the extension, or uninstall it. Uninstalling removes the extension’s local storage; files you downloaded remain in your Downloads folder until you delete them.
